Surrounded by family, Pastor Terry Mahnke, 67 of Rake, Iowa, died peacefully at his home on Saturday April 23, 2016.

Terrance David Mahnke was born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Roland and Helen (Work) Mahnke on August 16, 1948. In 1960, the family moved to Great Falls, Montana, where Terry was in the first graduating class of C.M. Russell High School.

Terry attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, where he met his wife, Carol, and he graduated from Moorhead State University in 1975. He and Carol married on March 1, 1975.

Covering local, state and national politics, Terry worked as a news photographer for two Fargo, North Dakota, television stations. He, once, travelled with a reporter to Saudi Arabia to cover North Dakota soldiers there in the 1980s.

In 1994, Terry left the news business to become a Lutheran pastor, graduating from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1998. He was ordained into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) ministry that same year.

Terry served parishes in Atalissa, West Liberty, Keokuk, and Muscatine, Iowa, before coming to Rake. In West Liberty, he worked with the Eulenspiegel Puppet Company to produce large parade puppets during each year’s vacation Bible school. In the Western Iowa Synod of the ELCA, he was chair of the Committee on Global Hunger. In Atalissa he helped start a growing project for the Food Resource Bank.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Kerr Mahnke, of Portland, Oregon, and Jon (Laura Corcoran) Mahnke, of St. Paul, and one grandson, Ambrose Mahnke, Portland, Oregon; and two brothers, Greg (Kathy) Mahnke, of Long Rock, Colorado, and Mark Mahnke, of Billings, Montana, as well as by a nephew and several good friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake with Bishop, The Reverend Rodger Prois officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. His family prefers memorials be directed to the ELCA World Hunger and be mailed to Zion Lutheran Church, Rake, Iowa 50465.
