Florence Margaret Kudej
September 28, 1928 - April 13, 2016

Florence M. Kudej, 87, of Forest City, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Madrid Home for the Aging in Madrid, Iowa.

Florence Margaret Currier, a daughter of Fred and Ida (Kolb) Currier, was born in Sanborn, Minnesota, on September 28, 1928, while her mother was visiting relatives. Florence graduated from Holy Family Catholic School in 1947 and worked as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, where she met her future husband, Donald Kudej. On January 4, 1949, they married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Duncan until 1955 when they moved to a farm near Wesley, Iowa. In 1963, they moved to their acreage near Forest City, Iowa, where they raised their six children.

A dedicated wife and mother, Florence, also, had a gift for service to others. Before she retired in 1990, she worked at the Forest City Municipal Hospital. After retiring, she continued working for ten years as a Winnebago County Home Health Aide. After losing her husband of sixty-one years, she moved to Madrid, Iowa, in 2010.

Throughout the years, Florence belonged to the Forest City Ambulance Service, the Catholic Daughters of America, the American Legion Auxiliary, St. James Guild, Farm Bureau Women, and various neighborhood clubs. Florence treasured her family. Indeed, she encouraged and supported her children and grandchildren in practicing and carrying on many holiday traditions and Christian values. For family gatherings, Florence, always, baked kolaches; she enjoyed making crocheted gifts; she loved reminiscing about the railroad as her dad was a train engineer; she enjoyed watching reruns of her favorite TV shows, especially Lawrence Welk.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Lawrence (Kim) Kudej, Swisher, Iowa, Joyce (Sanford) Gruhn, Humboldt, Iowa, Keith (Charla) Kudej, of Madrid, Iowa, Dr. Raymond (Amy) Kudej, of Westborough, Massachusetts, and David (Laura) Kudej, of Forest City; her son-in-law, Jim (Tracy) Voss, of Mason City, Iowa; twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren: Matthew Kudej, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Angie (Cory) Clark, and their children, Allie and Liam, of Ankeny; Andrew Voss, of Iowa City; Dan (Catherine) Gruhn, of Kasson, Minnesota; Joe (Mary) Gruhn, and their son, Thomas, of Maple Grove, Minnesota; Adam (Lindsey) Kudej, of Iowa City; Chuck Kudej, of Mason City; Emma and Ellie Kudej, of Westborough, Massachusetts; and Anton, Josef, and Sophia Kudej, of Forest City; two step-grandchildren, Matt (Rebecca) Brown, of Lone Tree, Iowa, and Kate (Tracy) Treiber, of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Mary Ellen Hanson, and a brother, Owen Currier, both of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; her daughter, Donna Voss; her grandchildren, Michael Kudej and Christine Gruhn; her brother, Fr. Thomas Currier; her sisters, Marjorie Curtis and Kathleen Lockwood, and her husband, Ralph; and her brother-in-law, John Hanson, all formerly of Mason City, Iowa.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 16, 2016, at St. James Catholic Church, 906 West O St., Forest City, with Father Paul Lippstock officiating. Burial will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Friday, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel in Forest City with a recitation of the Rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. James Catholic Church or the Madrid ACTS fund.
