Ernest K. Langerud
June 05, 1942 - March 17, 2016

Surrounded by his family, Ernest Keith Langerud, 73, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on March 17, 2016, at his home in rural Leland.

Ernest was born on June 5, 1942, in Forest City, Iowa, to Maynard Stanford and Ruth Bergett (Arnevik) Langerud. Baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church, he attended Read country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1960. Then, he enrolled at Mankato State University to pursue a business degree.

Over the years, he worked for Wells Canning Factory in Wells, Minnesota, and Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa. For a time, he, even, drove a laundry truck in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On July 12, 1969, he married Susan Frances Bradley at the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had two children, Melinda Sue and Michael Stanford. They lived on his family farm where he raised corn and soy beans. Ernie, strongly, believed in caring for and preserving God’s land. Indeed, he felt especially close to the Lord when he was working in the fields or mowing the lawn.

Ernie enjoyed having morning coffee in Vinje, Scarville, and Kiester. The family took yearly vacations in a motor home and then in a van. Later, Ernie and Sue traveled in the winter to Laughlin, Nevada, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, or to some other warmer location for three or four weeks. Throughout the growing season, he would take many trips to check on his crops. In addition, he enjoyed playing cards, working on the early computers, watching Mike’s tractor pulls, and playing with his three grandsons. A great tease, he loved to steal and hide their blankies if they didn’t watch out. He belonged to North Prairie and later to Salem Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years, Susan, of Leland, Iowa; his daughter, Melinda (Tracy) Farland, and three grandsons, Spencer, Nathan, and Eric, of Mason City, Iowa; his brothers, Calmer (Muriel) Langerud, of Mesa, Arizona, and David Langerud, of Blaine, Minnesota; his sister, Sally (James) Bevan, of Ottumwa, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Myrna Langerud, of Des Moines, Iowa; one aunt, Delores Langerud, of Forest City, Iowa; his brothers-in-law, Robert (Karen) Bradley, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and David (Linda) Bradley, of Veneta, Oregon; and a sister-in-law, Kathleen (Scott) Reader, of Tacoma, Washington; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Michael, in February 2003; his brother, Duane, in January 2003; his uncle, Bill, and his aunts, Sadie (Clarence) Langerud and Oleen (Norman) Kriel.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, March 21, 2016, at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa. Ernie’s family suggest memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401.
