Heiny, Alberta “Bert” Louise
July 25, 1936 - April 06, 2016

Alberta L. Heiny, age 79, of Lake Mills, died on Wednesday, April 06, 2016, at her home.

Alberta Louise (Pestorious) Severson Heiny was born on July 25, 1936, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Warren and Roselyn (Drommerhausen) Pestorious. Baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church of Pickerel Lake in rural Albert Lea, she attended and then graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1954. Next, she began working for Wilson’s Meat Packing Plant in Albert Lea.

In 1956, Bert married George Arthur Severson. They made their home in Albert Lea. Bert stayed at home to raise their children while George worked at Wilson’s. George passed away in 1967. In 1969, Bert married Dean Heiny. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Lake Mills. Dean passed away in 2004.

After Alberta enrolled in secretarial school, she began working for Streater’s and then for ALTEC (now Riverland Community College) where she worked in the financial aid office. She retired from that position ten years ago.

Bert had a passion for gardening (vegetables and flowers), collecting recipes (even though not all turned out as planned), hunting/fishing (always in search of the next big pheasant/trout), traveling (Mexico and the Black Hills, her two favorites), collecting antique crocks and dolls, attending auctions, and supporting Ducks Unlimited. She will be remembered for her banana bread, fried chicken, and rolls, which were always delicious. Her family will miss her infectious smile, hearty laugh, and all the tall-tales she loved sharing.

In more recent years, Bert was Granny the Nanny to her great-granddaughter, Sammy, in Albert Lea. She cherished every moment she was able to attend to Sammy’s needs.

She is lovingly survived by her four daughters, Debra (Zane) Merriman, of Yale, Oklahoma, Susan (Ray Pederson) Kiel, of Grand Marais, Minnesota, Patricia Severson, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mary Ellen (Neil) Warns-Anderson, of Waubay, South Dakota; and her grandchildren, Nicole (Steve) Ambrose; Melissa (Chris) Bertelson; Brendon Colby; John Kiel; Bobbie, Brooke, and Emily Merriman; Sarah (Eric) Oppedal; Amie Petersen; Carrie (Joe) Rossing; Jeff (Kari) Severson; and Bradley (Libby), Bryan, Minda, and Mitchell (Amy) Warns; as well as by numerous great-grandchildren, extended relatives, and friends.

Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Roselyn; her husbands, George and Dean; a son, Jeff Severson; a grandson-in-law Jason Johnson; and two brothers, Marvin and Kenneth Pestorious.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 11, 2016, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Concordia Lutheran Cemetery of Pickerel Lake, rural Albert Lea, Minnesota. Visitation for Alberta will be on Sunday, April 10, 2016, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday.
