Grace Bosma
April 18, 1909 - March 8, 2016Grace Bosma, 106, of Buffalo Center, died on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
A daughter of Oltman and Gertie (Smith) Akkerman, Grace was born on April 18, 1909, on a farm near Buffalo Center, Iowa. Baptized as a young child by Rev. Aleck Russell at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, she attended country school in the area. While growing up, she helped her mother and father on the farm.
On March 28, 1928, she married Thomas Fred Bosma, Jr., at her parents’ home with Rev. Aleck Russell officiating. Together, they farmed near Buffalo Center.
Grace was known for her joy in doing for her family and others. She enjoyed belonging to the Women’s Group at church. She took pride in her home and garden, often singing or whistling as she went about her work. She loved bringing hot tea to “her boys” on cold winter mornings and keeping her cookie jar filled for her grandchildren. She was, always, busily doing something. Her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren have many of her “works of love” in the many quilts and hand-embroidered items she enjoyed doing as her hobby. Her sense of humor, smile, and her enjoyment of just sitting and visiting during tea-time will be missed.
Those left to honor her life with their memories include her three sons, Ray (Navonne) Bosma and Larry (Linda) Bosma, of Buffalo Center, and Gary (Cindy) Bosma, of Hutchinson, Minnesota; her grandchildren: Denny Bure, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Melissa (Charles) Williams, of Texas, Shannon (John) Keeley, of Sparks, Nevada, Devin (Casey) Bosma, of Arlington, Texas, Katie Bosma, of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Matthew (Susie), Adam (Danielle), and Eric (Kasie) Bosma, all of Minnesota; her great-grandchildren: Zachary and Megan Lindsey; Amanda, Dexter, Logan, Megan, and Trevor Bosma; and Mason and Madison Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, in 1979, her daughter, Betty Bure, in 2002, her son-in-law, Carl Bure, in 1998, her daughter-in-law, Juanita Bosma, in 2007, and her four sisters, Jennie Grothe, Wilma Stewart, Lois Teigen, and Alvera Hanson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30, AM, Saturday, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Brad DeVries officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Friday, at the Winter Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church.
