Helen Lucile Groe
August 10, 1924 - November 27, 2015Helen L. Groe, 91, of Charlottesville, Virginia, formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Friday, November 27, 2015, at the Colonnades Nursing Home in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Helen was born to Tressa (Ulsted) and Wilhelm Otto on August 10, 1924, in Joice, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, she graduated from Joice High School in 1942. In 1944 she married Gaylord Groe. They, subsequently, had two children, Patricia and David. In 1949, they moved to Lake Mills where Helen lived until 2008 when she moved to Oregon to live with her daughter, Pat. In 2011, she and Pat moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, to be near Pat’s daughter.
An active member of Salem Lutheran Church during her years in Lake Mills, Helen taught Sunday school, participated in circle, and served on the altar guild. From 1966-1983, she worked as the high school principal’s secretary at the Lake Mills Community School.
Helen enjoyed reading and traveling. Most of all, however, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her ready smile and cheerful personality will be missed by all who knew her.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Patricia Johnson, of Charlottesville, Virginia; her son, David (Jan), of Blue Lake, California; two grandchildren, Bradley Johnson and Kristin (Ray) Kauffman; one step-granddaughter, Micah (Michael) McDonald; seven great-grandchildren, Margaret, Diana, Ray Franklin, Elizabeth, Piper, Claire, and John Kauffman; and three step-great-grandchildren, Paxton, Phoenix, and Penelope McDonald; one brother, Dale (Marilyn) Otto; her sisters-in-law, Bonnie and Jo Otto, Evelyn and Lovenea Groe, Carol Willand, Shirley Holstad, Marge Myhr, and Jean Wilson; and one brother-in-law, Dennis Groe.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gaylord; her son-in-law, William Johnson; her sisters, Delores, Dorothy, and Florence; her brothers, Carl and Harold; her sisters-in-law: Sue Otto; Norma and Gladys Groe; and Irene McDowell; and her brothers-in-law: Eugene Muller; Royden Larson; Byron Lockrem; Orlin, Raymond, Lester, and Noreen Groe; Bud Willand; Dale Holstad; Roy Myhr; and Sam Wilson; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 9, 2015, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Helen’s son, Pastor David Groe, officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Inurnment took place earlier at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.
