Deon Nadene Flugum
(May 4, 1927 - August 1, 2015)

Deon Nadene Flugum, 88, went to her final home in Heaven and into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus, on Saturday, August 1, 2015, at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, after a short battle from an injurious fall only a few days earlier.

Deon was born to Samuel Clarke and Harriet Lorraine (Gettis) Stewart on May 4, 1927. Growing up, she attended Lake Mills Community Schools and graduated with a deep love for music. In addition, she learned the loving ways of her parents and her one sibling, Leroy Robert Stewart, who also became her guardian and protector at a very young age. Most inportantly, however, they taught her the value of hardwork at their famous popcorn stand at the top of the hill on Mill Street.

Since Deon served nearly everyone in the community the popcorn she and her mom made, she became quite popular. Indeed, she met the love of her life, Marvin Flugum, at that popcorn stand. For his part, Marvin fell head over heels for Deon the moment he first met her although she was only fifteen. After patiently waiting for her to turn eighteen, Marvin proposed. They married on May 20, 1945, beginning their wonderful seventy year marriage.

As soon as Marvin was discharged from the service after World War II, he and Deon began farming together. After saving up enough money, they bought a farm two miles east of Scarville, Iowa. Between the busy times on the farm, Deon, because of her musical abilities, received numerous requests to sing at various weddings and funerals as well as at many church events over the years. Indeed, she, still, loved to sing with that crystal clear soprano voice right up to her last days.

In addition to farming and church related activities, Deon and Marvin had many other interests including motorcycle riding, boating, skiing, fishing, hunting, gardening, and traveling many, many times across the USA. Deon had, always, hoped to set foot in all fifty states, Canada, and Mexico. She missed by only a few states.

As they grew older, Deon and Marvin decided to retire from farming and move to Emmons, Minnesota. At that time, they began traveling even more during the many years they wintered in south Texas. Indeed, from their southern home, they traveled to Mexico many times as well as to the surrounding states. Once the temperatures down there approached 100 degrees, however, they would rush back to Minnesota to enjoy the beauty of the Iowa/Minnesota summer and fall.

Deon is survived by her loving husband, Marvin; her children, Laurel Yost, of Scarville, now living on Deon and Marvin‘s first farm, Greg (and Sherry) Flugum, of Forest City, Iowa, and Nancy Rainer, of Thornton, Iowa; her grandchildren: Anne (Ryan White) Dawley; Jason (Samantha), Beth, and Benjamin (Alana) Flugum; Heather (Seth Buck) and Justin (Miho) Gerdes; Caleb, Rebekah (Charlie Grant), Lucas (Hannah Steblay), and April (Josh Stevens) Sorbo; and Brian (Nicole), Christopher (Dixie), Douglas (Heather), and Stephanie Yost; twenty-eight great-grandchildren with one to be born in October; and one great-great-grandchild; as well as by several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other loved ones.

Preceding Deon in death are her parents; her brother, Leroy Robert (Phyllis) Stewart; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 6, 2015, at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minnesota, with Rev. Christopher Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills, Iowa. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Emmons Lutheran Church organ fund.
