Reuben, a son of David and Clara (Vold) Hanna, was born on August 30, 1927, in Winnebago County. Baptized on October 22, 1927, at North Prairie Lutheran Church and confirmed there as well in 1941, he attended country schools in Winnebago County and then graduated from Lake Mills High School with the class of 1946.
On July 4, 1948, Reuben married Eleanor Swenson at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scarville, Iowa. They, then, moved to a farm northwest of Lake Mills where they resided for nearly sixty years. Together, they raised seven children, farmed 160 acres, milked cows, and raised pigs.
In the early 1980s, Reuben began traveling throughout Iowa, Minnesota, and South and North Dakota working for Farm Bureau Insurance as a crop adjuster. He developed many friendships during these travels not only with farmers but also with other adjusters and Farm Bureau agents. In addition, he worked with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office measuring grain bins.
A member of the Countrymen Quartet, Reuben, also, enjoyed many years of singing with the North Iowa Barbershop Chorus. In addition, he served on the Lake Mills Community School Board, the Lake Mills Elevator Board, and the County ASCS Board. Throughout the years, he enjoyed attending the many activities of his children and later his grandchildren, always in the bleachers at their football, basketball, volleyball, baseball games, wrestling meets and car races as well as their many music and band concerts. Moreover, he enjoyed hand carving all sorts of various characters and sharing them with his family and friends.
A lifelong member of North Prairie Lutheran Church until its closing in 2003, Reuben, then, joined Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. While attending North Prairie, he served on the Church Council, the Cemetery Board, and as the Sunday School Superintendent.
Following Eleanor’s death in 2008, Reuben left the farm and moved to Mills Harbour in Lake Mills. In May of 2011, he married Delores Brunsvold. They made their home at Mills Harbour. Eventually, for health reasons, Reuben and Delores moved into the Lake Mills Care Center.
