John and Emma farmed east of Britt until 1953 when they moved to Crystal Lake and farmed there until 1956 when they moved to Thompson, Iowa. They farmed until John retired from active farming in 1975, but he continued working in Emma’s Westside Upholstery Shop which she had started in 1965 and continued to operate until 2000. John and Emma enjoyed taking trips throughout the Midwest and visiting relatives and friends. John passed away on September 1, 2004.

Emma continued to reside in Thompson until October 2010 when she moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, to be near her son, Dennis, her granddaughters, and her great grandchildren.
