Mary L. Hunt
November 14 1933 - April 16, 2015Mary L. Hunt, 80, of Forest City, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Born on November 14, 1933, Mary Louise Slater lived to the age of 80. During that time, she became a mother of four, a grandmother of nine, and a great grandmother of eight. In addition, she was always known as Mother Mary to a much larger group of children and adults who moved in and out of her life over years.
On November 28, 1952, Mary married E. Jay Hunt in Huron, South Dakota. After pastoring a year in Susanville, California, she and Jay moved back to South Dakota where she kept busy as a housewife and mother. Shortly after the birth of their second son, however, they moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado, where Jay had accepted a position as Chief of Police. Latter, while attending St. Mary’s School of Nursing and living in Boulder, Colorado, Mary gave birth to two more children. In addition to fulfilling her role as housewife and mother of four, she worked part-time for several years as a nurse at the Boulder Community Hospital.
In July of 1966, the family moved to Greeley, Colorado, where Mary worked in the records department of a local clinic. Then, in 1968, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Mary worked as a night supervisor for the Oral Robert's Evangelistic Association (OREA), while attending classes at Oral Roberts University (ORU). After five more years, the family moved to Sapulpa, Oklahoma, for a short time before going on to Collinsville, Oklahoma. After seven years of service, Mary resigned from OREA to become the Advertising Manager for the local paper, a job she loved. Then, after meeting and getting to know many people in town, she began a women's ministry, always ministering to and encouraging everyone she met. In 1975, the Hunts moved to Forest City, Iowa, where for the next thirteen years, Mary helped Jay as pastor of the Highway Chapel. Again, she established a women’s ministry where she made some of her closest friends.
After retiring, Mary and Jay moved to Jamestown, North Dakota, to be closer to her parents. After two years, they moved back to Tulsa where they worked as apartment managers for ten years. Then, they moved to Dansville, New York, to be closer to their youngest son and his family. They lived there until Jay became ill whereupon they then moved to Steelton, Pennsylvania, to again be closer to family. For several years, Mary did volunteer work as a chaplain's assistant ministering to many of the residents and staff at the nursing home where Jay lived.
In March of 2015, she moved back home to Forest City, Iowa, to be close to her daughter and several of her closest friends. Mary had only five weeks to enjoy her life here when she became ill and very quickly and quietly went home to her Heavenly Father, her husband, and a lot of family members.
Mary is survived by her children, Charles J. (Kim) Hunt, of Morrisville, North Carolina, Timothy J. (Annette) Hunt, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kathleen A. (Jeff) Robinson, of Thompson, Iowa, and James A. (Joanne) Hunt, of Steelton, Pennsylvania; her brother, Shelby DuWayne (Delores) Slater, of Lewiston, Idaho; her sister, Sandi (Brad) Anderson, of Fort Worth, Texas; her brother-in-law, Clarence Eugene Hunt, of Tomball, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; as well as innumerable nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Jay, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, JoAnne; and a host of other family members and friends
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 25, 2015, at the Forest City Four Square Church, 915 Hwy. 69 South, Forest City, with Pastor Jim Haake officiating. As she wished, her remains were cremated and there will be no visitation. Inurnment will be held at a later date next to her husband at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in central Pennsylvania.
