Virgil Dean Bakken, age 83, of Kiester, Minnesota, died on Sunday, March 29, 2015, at his home in Kiester.

Virgil, a son of Glenn and Rose (Ellingson) Bakken, was born on October 29, 1931, in Winnebago County, Iowa. After graduating from Kiester High School in 1949, he joined the United States Air Force. For his service, he received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the pistol marksman award, and the Presidential Unit Citation.

Before returning home, Virgil traveled Japan by train. After returning home, he worked first as a meat cutter in his parent's grocery store. Later, he worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa, for over twenty-six years as a welder and line operator.

Virgil married Carol M. Redig, and to their union two children, Mark and Vickie, were born. The couple later divorced. Virgil loved camping with his kids, fishing, playing "Spades", working on cars, and reminiscing about his Air Force experiences. Extremely proud of his service to his country, he joined the VFW and the Kiester American Legion.

Virgil is survived by his children: Mark Bakken and Vickie (husband Gary) Skartland, all of Kiester, Minnesota; his grand animals: Minnie Mae and Max; his three sisters: Ardel Dahling (special friend, Omer Wigern) and LaVonne Olson, all also of Kiester, Minnesota, and Ruth (husband Jerry) Jeno, of Owatonna, Minnesota; along with many nieces, nephews, and their families.
