U.S. Veteran Richard “Ricky” Lee Benson, 68, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Sunday, March 01, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Richard Lee Benson was born on October 3, 1946, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to John M. and Dorothy (Thompson) Benson. Confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, he graduated from Lake Mills Community School.

Richard was a man known by many names including Ricky, Rick, Dickie-Doodler, two-can, and the General to list a few. He may or may not have appreciated them all!

On February 24, 1966, Richard was inducted into the United States Army. After serving in Germany, he was honorably discharged on February 7, 1968.

Rick, then, moved to Mason City to work at Decker’s Packing House before returning to the Lake Mills area to work at Fleetguard for many years.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada and Northern Minnesota with family and friends. He loved camping and taking the boat out near Waterville, Minnesota. In addition, he enjoyed traveling to and sightseeing in the Black Hills. At other times, he liked bowling on a league and playing cards or a challenging game of chess. He, also, developed a good hand at table tennis among many other games. Nonetheless, no matter what game he was playing, Rick never enjoyed loosing! Spending most of his free time with friends, he always had a joke to share.

Survivors include his younger brother, Steven Benson, and his wife, Della; a nephew, Trevor (Molly) Benson; a niece, Katie (Mark) Wubben; and a great-nephew, Josiah Wubben, and a great-niece, Laina Benson, all of Lake Mills, Iowa, as well as extended relatives and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Peter Soli officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2015, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
