Beatrice Doris Carter, née Sveen
February 7, 1920 - February 1, 2015

Beatrice was born on February 7, 1920, near Thompson, Iowa, to Bert and Dena Sveen. Very proud of her family’s Norwegian ancestry, she was the second to the youngest of five brothers and five sisters and the lone survivor.

Bea graduated from Forest City, Iowa, High School in 1939. Then, she worked as a maid and helped mothers with their newborn babies. In 1942, she moved to El Segundo, California, to work at Douglas Aircraft. There, she proudly became one of the famous “Rosie the Riveters,” helping arm our country for the war. Later, she supervised a Navy fighter plane production line.

In May of 1946, Bea left California, moving to Raytown, Missouri. While caring for her father, Bert, she was employed at Hallmark Cards and the Singer Sewing Machine Company. In 1951, she started working for the Bendix Corporation as a supervisor over secure documents. She retired from Bendix in 1975.

In April of 1973, Bea married Harvey Carter and acquired three stepchildren. Prior to that time, she had always said, “If I ever get married, he will be tall, blond, and smoke a pipe.” Harvey was her man for over forty-one years.

Because Bea loved to travel, she and Harvey visited all fifty United States and five continents. She documented these travels in fifty photo albums! When not on the road, she loved to fish and garden with Harvey. She had a special passion for raising roses and sewing. Many relatives received quilts, and multiple churches banners for their sanctuaries. She spent hundreds of hours of her life volunteering with the Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries - Christmas Store, the Cancer Society, making bed pads, and Children’s Mercy Hospital, making baby blankets.

Beatrice was known for giving and receiving hugs as well as for loving the company of all kinds of people. A neighborhood mother to many children, she would remove slivers, treat sunburns, and hand out band aids. She made snow angels with anyone willing to lie down in the fluff, and she always kept M&Ms in her home in addition to many baked goods.

Beatrice remained an active member of the Overland Park Lutheran Church until she could no longer drive. She, recently, told her loved ones, “I have had a good life, and I am ready to meet my maker.”

The world lost a dear wife, caring stepmother, dedicated volunteer, and good Norwegian. She passed from this life to her eternity in the early hours February 1st, 2015. She is survived by her husband, Harvey Carter, her stepchildren, Michael (Sue) Carter, of Broomfield, Colorado, Janette (Jerry) Brady, of Augusta, Kansas, and Katherine Carter, of Kansas City; and her grandson, G. Kyle Brady, of Wichita; as well as by loving nephews, nieces, and their children.

A private family graveside service will be held with internment at Floral Hills Cemetery in Raytown, Missouri. A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM, Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Overland Park Lutheran Church, 7810 W. 79th St., Overland Park, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MLM (Metro Lutheran Ministry), the Overland Park Lutheran Church, or Cancer Action.
