Harlan B. "Howdy" Evenson
(November 17, 1937 - December 26, 2014)

Harlan B. “Howdy” Evenson, age 77, of Lake Mills, died on Friday, December 26, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Harlan Burnell Evenson was born on November 17, 1937, to Henry and Beulah (Tvedt) Evenson, in Joice, Iowa. Confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, he attended country school in rural Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

During his senior year of high school, Howdy began driving bus for LMCS (a job which he had for a total of fifty-two years). While working at this job he met Beverly Ann Orsland, a new first grade teacher, whom he married on December 30, 1959, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Lake Mills where they raised their four children.

In addition to driving school bus, Howdy worked at both Deluxe Products and the Lake Mills Creamery, but nothing compared to farming. A lifelong farmer, he enjoyed what he loved his entire life. Fortunately, he never had to retire from his beloved farming.

His hobbies varied and included hunting and fishing, softball leagues, collecting antique tractors (only the green kind), family pizza parties, the 79ers (a church group he enjoyed), but mostly spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always cheering them on in their many activities whether sports, music, or church, all the while visiting with those seated nearby. Never at a loss for words, Howdy, always, made people feel welcomed whatever the occasion. In addition, he made time to serve on the elevator board, the co-op board, and the soil conservation board. Moreover, he and Bev had many wonderful memories from trips taken to Israel and Norway for a family reunion not to mention a bus trip to New York and a vacation in Hawaii.

Howdy is lovingly survived by Beverly Evenson, his wife of nearly fifty-five years; his four children, Brad (Darla) Evenson, and their family, Amelia, Hannah, Scott (Sophia) Abbey, and Drake Abbey; David (Julie) and Daniel Evenson, all of Lake Mills; and Sonja (Lorn) Wallin, and their family, Michael, Daniel, Andrew, and Alise, of Glenville, Minnesota; his two sisters, Viola Brubak, of Northwood, Iowa, and Marilyn (Milton) Johnson, of Clear Lake, Iowa; and his brother- and sister-in-law, David and Betty Orsland, of Hendersonville, Tennessee; as well as by many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Beulah Evenson; five siblings and three brothers-in-law, Elaine and Clifford Sime, LaVonne Evenson, the twins, Arthur and Arlotte Evenson, Loma Evenson, Ray Brubak, and Richard Brictson; and a nephew, Jim Brictson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Peter Soli officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
