Donald Kenneth Bergo
(January 16, 1924 - December 20, 2014)U.S. Veteran Donald Kenneth Bergo, 90, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at his home in Lake Mills, Iowa.
The youngest of nine children, Donald Kenneth Bergo was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 16, 1924, to Peter Andreas “Andrew” and Emma (Nordskog) Bergo. Because his mother died when he was but two years old, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Mary and Anton Ohnsager. He was baptized on February 1, 1928, and confirmed on June 5, 1938, at Lake Park Lutheran Church in Lake Park, Minnesota.
After graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1942, Donald enlisted in the US Army on March 18, 1943. He, faithfully, served his country until he was honorably discharged on November 21, 1945. He, then, returned to Lake Mills where he worked at the Mills Theater and later at Graphic Publishing. He enjoyed reading, drawing, and cooking, but his true love was Hilma Singelstad, who was his companion for over sixty years before her death on August 13, 2011.
Don is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as by many members of the Singelstad family, who regarded him as a member of their family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Andrew Bergo; his foster parents, Mary and Anton Ohnsager; his sisters, Rhoda Anderson, Alice Weiland, Margaret Hoffman, Luella Hylbak, Harriet Street, and Lillian Lepp; and his brothers, Orvies and John Bergo; as well as by many brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Monday, December 29, 2014, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with Mr. Kermit Singelstad officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home.
