Raymond Arthur Pederson
(March 17, 1927 - July 27, 2014)

U.S. Veteran Raymond A. Pederson, 87, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa.

Raymond Arthur Pederson was born on March 17, 1927, on the family farm outside Rake, Iowa, the son of Carson and Marie (Bolstad) Pederson.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 while stationed in Korea during World War II.

He married Ruth Espeland on September 8, 1951, at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. Ray owned and operated the Rake DX Service Station in Rake, Iowa, and later worked as a mechanic at Jensvold Implement in Rake and Jensvold Chevrolet in Buffalo Center. In addition, Ray farmed Ruth’s family farm. He and Ruth lived in Rake until 1962 when they purchased their own farm by Lake Mills where they farmed until they retired.

Ray and Ruth were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Rake where Ray served on the Church Board. Later, they joined Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Ray also served on the Board at the Lake Mills Co-Op Elevator. In April of 2011, he traveled with his son, Gary, to Washington, D.C., for the Winnebago Honor Flight for World War II Vets.

A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Raymond enjoyed spending time with his family. A master mechanic, he also had a passion for farming.

Ray is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Ruth Pederson, of Lake Mills; his daughter, Victoria (Steve) Rye, of Mason City; and his son, Gary (Cindy) Pederson, of Lake Mills; his grandchildren, Sara (Derek) Thomas, of Mason City, Benjamin (Brooke) Pederson, of Lake Mills, Ashley (Joel) Dennhardt, of Iowa City, Rachel Rye, of Mason City, and Megan (Dan) Dietzel, of Iowa City; his great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Ray Lester, Adriana Tayler Rye, Eric Ramon Pals, Weston Rye Thomas, Lila Blu Pederson, and Willa Rae Pederson; his sisters, Nella Halvorson and Mae Hove, of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Pearl Bear, of Lake Mills, and Madeline Helland, of Northwood; his sister-in-law, Jean Canterbury, of Rake; and his brother-in-law, Stanley (Susan) Espeland, of North Branch, Minnesota.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lillian Chilcote; his father- and mother-in-law, Selmer and Josie Espeland; his brothers-in-law, Andrew Hove, Jr., Orin Halvorson, Hubert Bear, Robert Chilcote, Alvin Helland, Mack Canterbury, and Lynn Espeland, and his sister-in-law, Janice Fischbach; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Ray Lester and Nola Bea Pederson.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, August 1, 2014, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor Peter Soli and Pastor Scott Duffus officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Military rites will be performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235. Burial will take place at East Cemetery in Rake, Iowa.
