Byford Dean Rogness
(July 12, 1929 - May 20, 2014)

Surrounded by his family, Byford Dean Rogness, 84, of Emmons, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Byford Dean Rogness was born on July 12, 1929, to Alfred and Jenette (Bye) Rognes in Scarville, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church, he attended Larson country elementary school and Joice High School. On November 21, 1948, he married D. Colleen McCoy at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa, with Dr. Alvin Rogness officiating. Married sixty-five years, they had four sons.

Having been born on a farm, Byford not only grew up farming but farmed his entire life. During the early years, he farmed in the Joice, Iowa, Thompson, Iowa, and Oakland, Minnesota, areas, before settling on a farm near Emmons, Minnesota. In the off season, he enjoyed wood working and carpentry with Gene Moen.

For over twenty years, Byford and Colleen enjoyed traveling to Texas. They also made several trips to Florida, Hawaii, New York, and Washington, D.C. Byford also enjoyed playing golf and playing cards in his spare time. He always wanted to finish his planting every year in time for the fishing opener in Longville, Minnesota, which he would enjoy with his brother-in-law, Paul, and his many friends. He also looked forward to spending time with his family and friends at their lake home on Cedar Lake.

Byford is survived by his loving wife, Colleen, of Emmons, Minnesota; his sons, Doug (Kathy) Rogness, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jeff (Lucy) Rogness, of Minnetonka, Minnesota, and Brian (Jamie) Rogness, of Emmons, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Annie (John Paul) VanArsdale, of Scarsdale, New York, Jill (Craig) Smith, of Brooklyn, New York, Cassie (Mike) Bohmbach, of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Carter and Cooper Rogness, both of Emmons, Minnesota; his great-grandchildren, Stella Rose and Maxwell VanArsdale of Scarsdale, New York, and Stella Grayce Bohmbach, of Hopkins, Minnesota; his brothers, Oswald (Muriel) Rognes, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Ray (Loretta) Rognes, of Tampa, Florida; his sisters, Junice Bang, of Oviedo, Florida, Rosella Purcell, of Amherst, Ohio, and Norma (George) Barville, of Batavia, Illinois; his sisters-in-law, Mavis Rognes, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Maxine Tantow, of Mason City, Iowa, and Wilma (Chet) Amundson, of Clear Lake, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, John Moore, of Mason City, Iowa.

Byford was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Tom; and his brothers, Jerome and Al; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Donald Bang, Dale Purcell, Paul Tantow, Ralph McCoy, Helen (Dewey) Conley, and Merrill McCoy.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, May 23, 2014, at Sliver Lake Lutheran Church, 705 Silver Lake Road, Northwood, Iowa, 50459, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street in Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at Sliver Lake Cemetery in rural Northwood.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Lutheran Retirement Home, 700 – 10th Street N, Northwood, Iowa 50459, or to the Silver Lake Cemetery Fund.
