November 8, 1927 - March 18, 2014

Mattie D. Tweeten, 86, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient unit in Mason City.

Mattie D. Tweeten was born on November 8, 1927, in Forest City, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Esther (Hanna) Bartleson. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1945 and then attended Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, graduating with a teaching degree. She taught at a country school for a few years before marrying Edwin Heimdal in 1949 at the Forest City Evangelical Church. Mattie and her husband farmed for many years while raising their children. In 1968, Mattie decided to continue her education in nursing at NIACC. After graduating with a Nursing Certificate, she worked as a nurse at the Forest City Hospital before she retired in 1990. She met and married Alvin Tweeten in 1990.

Mattie enjoyed knitting, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and traveling with her late husband, Alvin. She, also, enjoyed the time she spent with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mattie is survived by her children, Elaine Dory, of Urbandale, Iowa, Martha Abraham, of Waukee, Iowa, Randal (Marcia) Heimdal, of Lucas, Iowa, and Edward (Karen) Heimdal, of Charles City, Iowa; her sister, Emma Murfin, of Forest City; her grandchildren, Jeff and James Kling, Michelle, Marsha, and Mark Abraham, Tricia (David) Shuffty, and Jason (Elizabeth) Heimdal; and her great-grandchildren, Alexis and Cooper Kling and Jackson Heimdal; as well as by many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Edwin Heimdal; her second husband, Alvin Tweeten; three sisters, Martha Bartleson, Phoebe Bartleson, and Geneva Clothier; her son in-law, Andrew Abraham; and two brothers in-law, Edward Clothier and Max Murfin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour before the services at the church. Inurnment will take place in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery in the spring.
