Raymond G. Aukes
(May 29, 1924 - December 3, 2013)

Raymond Aukes, age 89, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Ray was born on May 29, 1924, near Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Reinder (RE) and Anna (Onken) Aukes. A life-long member of the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, he also served on the board of deacons.

Ray went to country school until the eighth grade. He, then, attended high school at Buffalo Center. On January 22, 1946, he married Betty Hauskins at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Ray and Betty farmed near Thompson, Iowa, until 1960. They, then, moved to their present farm southwest of Buffalo Center. An active member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association for several years, Ray, primarily, raised beef cattle and hogs, but he, also, grew corn and soybeans. A true farmer at heart, he kept a log of dates and yields, read all of the farming magazines, and checked on the crops by driving around the countryside or flying around in a Tri-Pacer. A seed corn dealer for many years, he also enjoyed spending time with his customers. Ray farmed until he retired in 1989. Supporting his community, he served on the Board of Directors for the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

After retiring, Ray and Betty traveled in their trailer around Minnesota and Iowa looking for good fishing lakes. In the winter, they traveled to Florida, Texas, or Arizona, making new friends wherever they went. In most recent years, Ray continued working the land – growing vegetables and tending to his apple trees and then canning vegetables, peaches, and applesauce. As long as he kept active on the farm and had his pickup truck to drive around, he was satisfied. He always said he “didn’t need all that other stuff”¯ and that’s how he lived his life.

Ray is survived by his children; Gary (Orva) Aukes, of Payson, Arizona, Doug (Deb) Aukes, of Buffalo Center, LuAnn (Kevin) Johnson, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and Ron (special friend Kim) Aukes, of Buffalo Center; his eighteen grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren; his siblings, Rollin (Janice) Aukes, of Kiester, Minnesota, Mary (Mohamed) Khowassah, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Mildred (Aukes) Dontje, of Forest City, Iowa; and his special friend, Gelaine.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; his daughters, Lori Giesking and Sheryl Wilbur, and his siblings: Donald Aukes, Lily (Aukes) Weaver, Maxine (Aukes) Harms, Merle Aukes, Robert Aukes, Ervin Aukes, Loran Aukes, Ruby (Aukes) Hofbauer.

Ray’s sister Mildred passed away Thursday morning. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers as well.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Brad DeVries officiating. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM, Friday, December 6, 2013, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
