Ethel Elvera Mannes
(June 28, 1925 - October 11, 2013)Ethel Elvera (Senne) Mannes, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Lake Mills Care Center, Lake Mills, Iowa.
Ethel (Senne) Mannes was born in rural Woden, Iowa, on June 28, 1925, to Chris and Louise (Baade) Senne. Baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Titonka, Iowa, she married Ernest Kenneth Mannes at the same church on March 9, 1947. To this union, three sons were born, Kenneth Dean, Robert Allen, and Wayne Ernest.
A member of Salem Lutheran Church, Ethel actively participated in the Rachel circle and in WELCA. She, especially, enjoyed putting together school kits and layettes for mission work. She also served at and enjoyed many of the church activities.
Ethel worked as a farm wife while her sons were growing. One of the first employees at the Lake Mills Care Center in 1966, she was also worked there as a nurse’s aide for twenty-seven years.
Ethel made her family her life. She and Ernie took many trips to Arizona to visit extended family members, usually bringing back a spoon to add to her spoon rack. Her favorite family activities included playing baseball in the back yard with plastic bats and balls, freezing corn, and making lefse and kringla. She loved crocheting afghans and sewing denim quilts for all of her family members. She sewed Boy Scout patches, knee patches, and whatever else her family presented to her. She could mend anything! She also enjoyed playing golf with Ernie and friends.
Ethel is survived by her three sons, Kenneth, and his wife, Nylene Mannes, Robert, and his wife, Beverly Mannes, and Wayne, and his wife, Sue Mannes, all of Lake Mills; her grandchildren, Krystal Barker, and her fiancé, James Melton, Aaron, and his wife, Kristin Mannes, Allen Mannes, and his friend, Sara Harper, Ben Mannes, and his fiancée, Ashley Wangen, Chris, and his wife, Mary Mannes, Kyle, his wife, LuAnn Mannes, Michael Mannes, and his friend, Julia Cira, LeAnn, and her husband, Robert Storby, and Vera, and her husband, Steven Story; her great-grandchildren, Shana and Natalie Barker; Aidan Benny; Andrew, Adam, Alex, Austin, Brynna, Hallie, Maddie, and Oscar Mannes; Sookie Melton; Brittani Neumann, and her fiancé, Brent Bjelland; Blake Storby, Mitchell Storby, and his fiancée, Stephanie Borcherding; and Morgan and Patrick Scheib; her sister, Lucille Friesenborg; her brother, Marlin, and his wife, Marjorie Senne; and her sisters-in-law, Ruth Fosnaugh and Jean Pierson; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by Ernest Mannes, her loving husband of fifty-seven years; her parents, Chris and Louise Senne; her brother, Alvin, and his wife, Marjorie Senne; her brother-in-law, George Friesenborg; her in-laws: Judy Block, Alma Helland, Doris Johnson, Esther Koch, and Alfred and Irvin Mannes; and one grand-daughter, Anna Louise Mannes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with the Rev. David E. Jordon officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, October 14, 2013, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday morning.
