John Thomas Koehler
November 27, 1943 - September 29, 2013

FOREST CITY - John Thomas "Tommy" Koehler, age 69, of Forest City, died on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

"Tom" Koehler was born on November 27, 1943, the son of Harley and Anne (Madson) Koehler. After Anne married Allan Hanna, John lived with them on a farm near Woden, Iowa. He attended a rural one room school until he started the eighth grade at Woden Schools. A 4-H member, he exhibited both sheep and rabbits at the Winnebago county fair. He also attended Grant Lutheran Church. After graduating from Woden-Crystal Lake High School, he drove truck for Marting Manufacturing in Britt, hauling hog feeders throughout the United States. In time, he went to school in Omaha to learn auto body repair. After graduating from the Omaha school, he was employed by Prichard Auto of Britt. He also lived in California for two or three years before returning to the Ames area where he worked for Benson Motors. Later in his life, he worked as a nurse’s aide at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

John was diagnosed with scleroderma in his mid-50s, which eventually became a leading cause for his death. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his biological father; a sister, Patricia; and his step-father. He is mourned by his mother, Anne Hanna; his siblings, Carol Neal and Paul Hanna; his sister-in-law, Jeanette Hanna; and his niece and great-nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express gratitude to all those who cared for John over the years at the Mercy Medical Center, the Good Samaritan Care Center, the Nora Springs Care Center, and, most recently, Hospice of Northern Iowa. His care givers also became like family to him, and he enjoyed interacting with them.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City Iowa. Graveside Services will follow the visitation at the Grant Township Cemetery in rural Woden, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial be directed to the Good Samaritan Society.
