William Heyer
(September 4, 1916 - October 20, 2013)

William Heyer, age 97, of Britt and formerly of Buffalo Center, passed away on October 20, 2013, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

A son of William and Grace (Naber) Heyer, William was born on September 4, 1916, in Winnebago County, Iowa. He grew up around Buffalo Center, Iowa.

A member of the First Reformed Church of Buffalo Center, Bill never missed a broadcast when he couldn’t attend. On September 19, 1940, he married Anna Folkerts. They were blessed with four children: Judith, Larry, Arlo, and Bruce.

Bill took over the farm from his dad and continued to operate it until he retired in 1982. He and Anna, then, moved to an acreage near Buffalo Center, and in 1997, they moved to Britt where their children lived.

For Bill, farming was his way of life even after he had made the transition from the farm to town. He always watched how the crops and markets were doing and read his farm magazines. He also liked watching wrestling on TV and attending farm auctions.

A very talented person, he could repair and build almost anything. He built tractors and trailers for the boys. He also built the garage on his house when he moved from the farm at the age of 80.

Bill is survived by his four children: Judy (Dick) Leerar and Larry and Arlo Heyer, all of Britt, and Bruce (Debra) Heyer, of Clear Lake; his grandchildren: Brian (Kim) Leerar, of Britt, Randy (Teresa) Leerar, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Lori (Wil) Benjamin, of Chicago, Illinois, Jeremy (Jessica) Heyer, of Boone, Iowa, and Jennifer (Wade) Roberts, of Clear Lake, Iowa; as well as by nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Fred; and his loving wife.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 24, 2013, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
