Harlan Aukes
(May 5, 1950 - August 19, 2013)

Harlan Aukes, age 63, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013, at his home.

Harlan was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, on May 5, 1950, to Merle and Joy Aukes. Throughout his life, he lived at Woden, Lake Mills, Buffalo Center, and in his beloved Texas.

Harlan spent his most enjoyable times interacting with his son and “daughter,” helping a young colt reach the potential only he knew hid inside, watching the birds at his feeders and the pheasants in the field, and planting and growing things whether it be a small flower or the tall corn. Known for his gruff demeanor, those who really knew him realized he had a soft heart and called him “Cowboy.”

Harlan is survived by Sarah, his wife of twenty-seven years; his sons, Andy (Shannon), of Le Sueur, Minnesota, and Shannon (Amy), of Monroe, Wisconsin; his brothers, Dennis (Sandy), of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Larry (Deb), of Buffalo Center, and Mark, of Forest City; his sister, Jeanie (Brad) Grotewold, of Lake Mills; his aunt, Gen Dearing, of Buffalo Center, his mother-in-law, Eileen Behrends, of Rake; his brother-in-law, Rod (Nether) Behrends, of Texas; and his sisters-in-law, Anne Behrends and Melissa Petersen, of Clinton, Iowa, and Pam Behrends and CJ, of Arizona; as well as by several special nieces, nephews and friends.

Harlan is preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Joy Aukes; an infant brother, Roy; a niece, McKayla Aukes; an uncle, Marvin Dearing; his father–in–law, Fred Behrends, and his sister-in-law, Janet Behrends.

Memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 23, 2013, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Thursday, August 22, 2013, also at the church. Inurnment will be at the Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
