Leighton L. Humphrey, 85, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Saturday, December 15, 2007, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

An active member of his church, he served many years on the staff of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s “Lutheran Sentinel” publication. A proud World War II veteran and longtime member of the American Legion, he earned a Bronze Star while serving his country.

Leighton enjoyed several pastimes. An avid fisherman, he took yearly fishing trips with his family to Canada and northern Minnesota. A sports fan, he followed the Hawkeyes and Packers with special intensity. He enjoyed family barbecues and Sunday dinners, gardening, reading, listening to music, following the daily cryptoquote, and having morning coffee with friends. In short, Leighton enjoyed life, especially spending time with his family and friends.

Leighton is survived by his wife, Gladys; his three children, William (Karen) Humphrey, of Lake Mills, James Humphrey, of New Ulm, Minnesota, and Mary (Orlan) Lau, of Lake Mills; thirteen grandchildren: Michelle, Chad, Derek, Chelsea, Matthew, Jessica, Megan, Stephanie, Nathan, Teresa, Rachael, Cory and Alex; nine great-grandchildren: Hannah, Drew, Connor, Noah, Macie, Jordyn, Hailey, Lucas, and William; two brothers, Robert (Karen) Humphrey, of Clear Lake, and Wayne (Janet) Humphrey, of Deming, New Mexico; and one sister, Cleo McKim, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Miller, of Lake Mills; and one brother-in-law, Orvin (Lynn) Peterson, of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lucille Humphrey; his son, Stephen Humphrey; his grandson, Michael Humphrey; his great-grandson Spencer Humphrey; his brother, Earl Humphrey, and his in-laws, Emil and Evelyn Peterson and Robert McKim.
