Lillian E. Buhmann
(October 16, 1918 - January 6, 2013)

Lillian E. Buhmann, age 94, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Sunday, January 06, 2013, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa.

Lillian Emma (Brones) Buhmann was born on October 16, 1918, the daughter of Jay and Betha (Kessey) Brones, in rural Swea City, Iowa. She lived with her parents on the family farm throughout her school years. She attended country school and Swea City High School, graduating in 1935. She, then, attended college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, earning an Iowa State Teaching Certificate enabling her to teach country school.

She married William Buhmann on June 8, 1941. A supportive farm wife and homemaker, she gave birth to four sons during the 1940s and early 1950s. In the early years, she and Bill farmed in Martin County, Minnesota. In 1956, the family purchased a farm, and in 1957, they moved to Freeborn County northwest of Emmons, Minnesota. This farm is still in the family today. Her later career included working at Deluxe Products in Lake Mills, Iowa, retiring in 1980 after sixteen years.

Lillian was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Lillian lived with her husband, Bill, on the farm until 2002 when they moved to the Forest Plaza Assisted Living Facility in Forest City, Iowa, and in 2007, to the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly, Iowa. After Bill’s death, Lillian briefly returned to Forest City until 2009. After surgery in 2009, she moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa, where she spent her final years.

Cheerful, thoughtful, adventurous, and patient, Lillian cherished her family, especially her six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She liked learning new things and lived her life in a very goal oriented manner. The family’s anchored pivot point, she always knew the next ‘right’ action to take. She will be greatly missed.

Lillian is survived by her three sons: Ronald (Janice Dahle) Buhmann, of Boulder, Colorado, Larry (Janet) Buhmann, of Edina, Minnesota, and Duane (Lorene) Buhmann, of Lake Mills, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Betty Buhmann, of Cedarville, Ohio; her grandchildren: Angela (Scott) Yarbrough, of Longmont, Colorado, William (Holly) Buhmann, of Princeton, Minnesota, Joseph Buhmann, of Edina, Minnesota, Jennifer (Ryan) Wirtjes, of Denver, Iowa, Andy (Heather Hill) Buhmann, of Scarville, Iowa, and John Buhmann, of Cedarville, Ohio; her great grandchildren, Arielle and Ethan Yarbrough; Arabella and Abigail Buhmann; Blaine Thornberg; Shauna Koch; and Kasey, Krisanne, and Brody Wirtjes; a brother, Kenneth Brones, of Swea City, Iowa; and a sister-in-law Maxine Brones, also of Swea City, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Buhmann; her son, Carroll Buhmann; her parents; and three brothers, Andrew, Hubert, and Warren Brones; as well as several sisters- and brothers-in-law, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minnesota, with Pastor Katie Pals officiating. Burial will take place in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kiester.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 11, 2013, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
