Richard D. Bendickson, age 85, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, January 6, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Richard Dean Bendickson was born on December 8, 1927, on the family farm in rural Lake Mills, Winnebago County, Iowa, to George T. and Alice (Martinson) Bendickson. He attended country school through the 8th grade and then Northwood High School in Northwood, Iowa.

Following his schooling, Richard worked at the Decker Packing Plant in Mason City, Iowa, for a number of years.

On October 25, 1950, in Des Moines, Richard was drafted into the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict as a driver in a motor pool. He was honorably discharged from active duty on October 11, 1952, at Fort Custer, Michigan.

Richard again began working for Decker’s as well as helping on the family farm. Later, he moved with his parents to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he worked for a bakery and at the Armstrong Department Store. After the family moved back to Lake Mills, he was employed by Ulve Tiling Company.

Mr. Bendickson had most recently been a custodian at the Lake Mills Community School where he worked until he retired.

Survivors include his sister, Marian A. Lucken, and two nephews, Lonn Lucken and Lamarr Lucken, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alice Bendickson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, January 11, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Cremation will follow the service, and Richard’s inurnment will take place in the spring at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills. Military Honors will be conducted by the Otto/Chose Post #235 in Lake Mills. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
