Wilbur L. Olson
January 8, 1917 - November 27, 2007

FOREST CITY -- Wilbur L. Olson, age 90, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center West Campus in Mason City.

Wilbur L. Olson was born in rural Forest City, Iowa, on January 8, 1917, the son of Lewis and Clara (Larson) Olson. Baptized and confirmed at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, he received his education in a rural school near his home. In 1935, he graduated from Ventura High School.

Wilbur married Gladys L. Hope in Trenton, Missouri, in 1937. Most of his life, he farmed on the family homestead. He also worked part-time as an electrician for many years. For twenty-seven years, he and Gladys lived in Benson, Arizona, every winter. In 1992, they left their family farm and moved into Forest City. Since August, 2006, the couple had resided at Forest Plaza Assisted Living.

Wilbur liked traveling and loved telling how he had visited all fifty states including a trip he won to Hawaii which he and Gladys enjoyed immensely. He also made several trips to Norway as well as others to Germany and Israel. In addition, he liked delivering motor homes for Winnebago Industries, often taking his grandchildren along in the early days to share his love of travel. He also loved to fish and went on many trips with friends. He enjoyed showing off the pictures of the big fish he had caught on a trip to Alaska.

Wilbur looked forward to coffee every morning with his friends at Otto Anderson’s as long as he was still able to drive there himself. After he was no longer able to get there alone, he would often catch a ride with a friend.

A lifelong member of the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, he served the church in various capacities over the years. He also served as Ellington Township Trustee and on the Hancock County Extension Board.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Gladys; his daughters, Pat (Dennis) Hagen, of Forest City, and Phyllis Olson, of Urbandale, Iowa; his son, Robert A. Olson, of Forest City; six grandchildren and their spouses: Pamela (William J.) Madsen, of Maplewood, Minnesota, Deborah (Greg) Geddes, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Denise (Brad) Yeager, of Forest City, Joleen (Tim) Baumgartner, of Pearl City, Illinois, Sam (Kylie) Pfile, of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Sara Olson, of Forest City; his five great-grandchildren whom he adored: Quinten, Christian, and Alexandra Geddes and Austin and Elsa Yeager; his brother, Leslie (Irmalee) Olson, of Forest City; and his sister, Ionia Oman, of Glen Burnie, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Lyman Oman.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007, at 10:30 AM at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City with Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating. Burial will be at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 30, 2007, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home and an hour prior to the service at the church.
