Shirley B. Meyer
(June 20, 1939 - October 14, 2012)

Shirley Meyer, age 73, of Mansfield, Texas, formerly of Buffalo Center, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Watercrest Assisted Living in Mansfield, Texas, while in the care of Envoy Hospice. During her final days, the staff at the facility provided excellent assistance to meet her needs and ensure her comfort.

Shirley Bernice Meyer, daughter of Herman and Bernice (Isebrands) Tjarks, was born on June 20, 1939, at Titonka, Iowa. She graduated from Titonka High School in 1956 and continued on to Northwestern Junior College, graduating in 1958 with a degree in elementary education. She, then, taught first grade at both West Bend and Titonka schools.

She married Jack Meyer on April 6, 1963, at the Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka, Iowa. Together, they raised their family on the home farm northwest of Buffalo Center.

Shirley loved teaching and spent most of her adult life instructing children in various classrooms in several school districts. She returned to teaching in 1969 at Ledyard Community School and then moved to Lakota Elementary several years later. During this time, she also continued her education and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1974 from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1979. In 1979, she accepted a position at Buffalo Center Rake High School to initiate a special education classroom. In 1986, she accepted a teaching position in the Ysleta School system in El Paso, Texas. She spent the last several years of her career teaching in the San Elizario School system. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching and found great fulfillment in her student's achievements.

Shirley enjoyed teaching, reading, spending time with her friends and family, and attending church activities. She continued to enjoy her retired life taking various trips and vacations with her friends. After her health declined forcing her to limit and restrict many of her activities, she, finally, relocated to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to be closer to her daughter.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Brian, and his wife, Kelli, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Dale, of Tabor City, North Carolina, and Shelly, and her husband, Darryl West, of Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren: Brittni and Brooke West, of Arlington, Texas, and Lauren, Nicole, Emma, and Andrew Meyer, of Apple Valley, Minnesota; one brother, Roger, and his wife, Linda Tjarks, of Titonka, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Arlys, and her husband Lee Meyer, of Sherburn, Minnesota; and one brother-in-law, Laverne, and his wife, Judy Brue, of Forest City, Iowa.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents; and her sister, Gloriann Brue.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastors Brad DeVries and Jim West officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
