Larry Gene Behrends
January 19, 1951 – September 4, 2012Larry Gene Behrends, 61, of Forest City, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Larry was adopted by Theodore Donald Behrends and Wanetta Bell Behrends on September 11, 1953, in Belmond, Iowa.
After attending Belmond Community High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served for four years. Larry, then, worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He lived in many places during his career including Salt Lake City, Utah; Sheridan, Wyoming; Loma Linda, California; Las Animas, Colorado; Detroit, Michigan; Canoga Park, California; Belmont Shore, California; and Baltimore, Maryland. After twenty-four years of service, he retired at the age of 45 in 1997 and moved back home with his family to Forest City, Iowa.
Larry married his soul mate, Debra Kay Behrends, on October 22, 1988, in Nashua, Iowa, at the Little Brown Church.
Larry enjoyed reading books about the American Revolution and the development of the American West. He also enjoyed creating genealogy profiles for families, caring for his horses, creating websites, and playing the guitar. Larry's passions were being home with his family, working on his lakeside home, and fishing from his dock and boat.
Larry is survived by his wife, Debra Kay Behrends; his beloved children, Michael Gregory Behrends and Kristin Taylor Behrends, of Forest City, Iowa, Gregory Lawrance (Denise Kay) Behrends, of Hastings, Nebraska, and Brandi Kristina Behrends, of Fort Worth, Texas; his brother, Leon Dale (Reha Francis) Behrends; and his sisters, LaRay Lee (Mike) Keiser and Lorraine Lee (Mike) Nelson, of Brooklyn, Iowa. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Donald Behrends; his mother, Wanetta Bell Behrends; and his best friend and dog, Cami.
His funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 8th, 2012, at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Church. The Boman Funeral Home of Webster City in charge of arrangements.
