Murlette Serena Hagen
(March 1, 1915 - August 3, 2012)

Murlette S. Hagen, age 97, of Lake Mills, died Friday, August 03, 2012, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Murlette Serena Lovick Hagen was born March 1, 1915, in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, to Henry and Ida Hanson Lovick. The oldest of twelve children, she quickly became her mother’s helper. She said she became the “chores” helper while Amy, the next child, helped more with the younger children. She attended Rusley country school and worked in the homes of many neighboring farm families.

She married Gilman Richard Hagen at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, Iowa. They made their home near Kensett and later moved to their home farm in rural Lake Mills. Murlette was known for her delicious food and immaculate house as well as for working side by side with Gilman doing the farm chores. After Gilman’s death, she worked at the Lake Mills Care Center in housekeeping for nearly twenty years, a position she excelled at and thoroughly enjoyed.

Upon her marriage, she became a member of Sion Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member until her death. Throughout the years, she was an active member of WELCA and circle. Under her guidance, her three children also actively participated in the church. She lived in kindness and service to others.

As Murlette’s health declined, her daughter, Linda, cared for her at home until Murlette, of necessity, became a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center in 2009.

Survivors include her children, Gordon and Jean Hagen, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Linda Hagen, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Albuquerque, New Mexico; her daughter-in-law, LeAnn Hagen, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her grandchildren, James Hagen, Jeff and Mary Beth Hagen, Rodney and Samantha Hagen, Angie and Doug Bacon, and Sara and Warren Brackey; her great-grandchildren, Staci, Andrew, Eric, and Ashley Hagen, Kendall and Cameron Hagen, Natalie, Clint, Clay, and Sydney Hagen, Jacob, Jordynn, and Josie Brackey, Mitchell Storby, and Caleb and Logan Bacon; and one great-great-grandson, Mitchell Hagen. She is also survived by two brothers, James and Alvera Lovick, of Fertile, Iowa, and Leo and Marlys Lovick, of Ackley, Iowa; three sisters, Elaine and Bob Ollenberg, of Garner, Iowa, Alice Toresdahl, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Doris Bonstetter, of North Carolina; and three sisters-in-law, Anita Lovick of Washington, Iowa, Diane Lovick, of Forest City, Iowa, and Thelma Swanson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Ida Lovick; her husband, Gilman Hagen; her son, Gary Hagen; her grandson, Steven Hagen; three sisters, Amy Brakke, Irene Brakke, and Pearl Hanna; three brothers, Paul Lovick, Ardie Lovick, and Larry Lovick; and in-laws, Gladys Lovick, Don Brakke, Harvey Brakke, Raymond Hanna, Gordon Toresdahl and Frank Bonstetter.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Mr. Kermit Singelstad officiating.
Burial will take place in Sion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Monday, August 6, 2012, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM and will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
