Richard "Dick" DeVries
(October 23, 1928 - July 10, 2012)Richard “Dick” DeVries, age 83, of Buffalo Center, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Titonka Care Center.
Richard “Dick” DeVries was born on October 23, 1928, to Robert and Kate Anderson DeVries in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He grew up the youngest of nine children, participated in Eagle Scouts, and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1946.
Dick married Evelyn Beenken on June 22, 1950, at the Ramsey Reformed Church.
He served in the Korean War as a military police officer from 1947-1949. Upon returning home, Dick worked as a farmer, as owner and operater of the DeVries Lumberyard and the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store, and as a school bus driver for many years. He also enjoyed his time as a member of the Buffalo Center Volunteer Fire Department and VAC as well as a Boy Scout leader.
He is survived by his two children: Tim (Lisa) DeVries, of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Patty (Tom) Holland, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; six grandchildren: Chris (Kristy) Holland, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Tony (Mollie) Holland, of Plymouth, Minnesota, Ted DeVries, of Mankato, Minnesota, Andy (Sheila) Price, of Champlin, Minnesota, Hanna DeVries, of Mankato, Minnesota, and Jeffrey Price, of Maplewood, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren: Carsyn Holland, Ethan, Lacey, and Caryn Price; and a sister; Ruth Wilson, of Sioux City, Iowa.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; his brothers: Jim, Bob, Charlie, and Jack; and his sisters: Ethel Oldaker, Elsie Larson, and Gladys Becker.
A memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM, Friday, July 13, 2012, at The First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, July 12, 2012, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Burial will be at a later date.
