Shirley Ann Peterson
(March 13, 1931 - December 21, 2008)

Shirley Peterson, age 77, of Holyoke, Minnesota, formerly of the Emmons, Minnesota, and the Lake Mills, Iowa, area was called to her eternal home on Sunday, December 21, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. Shirley had struggled for over eight years with complications caused by her lingering scleroderma disease.

Shirley (Heise) Peterson was born on March 13, 1931, near Emmons, Minnesota, to Harry and Norah (Evenson) Heise. She attended school first in rural Freeborn County and then at Emmons High School. In her younger married years, Shirley enjoyed taking motorcycle trips with her husband, Arlo. She taught Sunday school for several years and especially enjoyed working with the younger children. In later life, she enjoyed gardening and taking care of her roses and other outdoor shrubs and plants. She also loved her two Persian house cats. As her terminal illness progressed, she found Sunday worship services and personal Bible reading most comforting. Her unshakable faith carried her through the difficult final weeks of her life on earth.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Arlo, of Holyoke, Minnesota; her son, Arlyn, and his wife, Barbara, of Cyrus, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Allen, Bobby, Melissa (Hoffman) and Sheila (Krause), all living in western and northwestern Minnesota; and three great-grandchildren, Desirée and Chase Hoffman and Elijah Krause. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 26, 2008, at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in rural Joice, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Olson officiating. Burial will take place at the Winnebago Lutheran Church Cemetery southwest of Lake Mills.
Visitation will be on Thursday, December 25, 2008, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
