Leona Bye
(November 5, 1921 - September 28, 2011)

Leona Bye, age 89, of Lake Mills, formerly of Scarville, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Leona Frances Bye was born November 5, 1921, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, to Gilbert and Sally (Benson) Helland. She was baptized and confirmed at Lime Creek Lutheran Church in rural Emmons, Minnesota. She attended country school and later graduated from Emmons High School.

She married Harold Bye on November 1, 1941. The couple farmed near Scarville where they lived until Harold’s death in 2007. She, then, moved to Lake Mills and entered the Lake Mills Care Center in July 2009.

Leona had been an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for the past seventy years where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of Love Circle and the WELCA.

A quilter, she made many special quilts for her family. In addition, she loved to embroider and put puzzles together. But most of all, she loved her role as a mom, grandma, and great-grandma. She attended and enjoyed every activity her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participated in.

Survivors include her four children: Ellyn (Duaine) Harmon, Lake Mills, Iowa, Nancy (Ron) Sime, Rake, Iowa, Harris (Rachel) Bye, Scarville, Iowa, and Howard (Gil Torre) Bye, of Seattle, Washington; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-granchildren: Doug (Rhonda) Harmon, Chelsea, Derek and Jerod, Lake Mills, Iowa; Donica (Doug) Arneson, Samantha (Mike) Petersburg, and Charlie Arneson; Wendy (Brandon) Melz, Bailey, Jordan, Kylie, and Regan, Chanhassen, Minnesota; Heidi (Cory) Grafton, Lillian and Loretta, Mason City, Iowa; Robin (Brian) Charlson, Joseph and Emily, Lake Mills, Iowa; Anthony Bye, Dumont, Iowa; Sonja (Steve) Rasmussen, Estherville, Iowa; David Bye, Seattle, Washington; Julia Bye, Highland Ranch, Colorado; her sisters, Gertrude (Melvin) Mattson and Marvel Schewe, and her brothers, Glenn (Alicia) Helland and Floyd (Penny) Helland, all of Albert Lea, Minnesota; her sisters-in-law, Juleta Severson, Calgary, Canada, and Geneva Martinson, Lake Mills, Iowa; and her brother-in-law, George Scott, North Brookfield, Massachusetts; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; her sister, Esther Scott, her sister and brother-in-law, Velma (Frank) Cunningham; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester (Maxine) Helland, Rudolph (Jean) Helland, and her brothers-in-law, Virgil Severson and Royden Martinson.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, Monday, October 3, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating.

Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 PM Sunday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450.

Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Scarville, Iowa.
