Orene E. Sanden
(December 28, 1916 - September 19, 2011)

Orene E. Sanden, 94, Lake Mills, passed away Monday, September 19, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City Iowa.

She was born Orene Ethel Martinson on December 28, 1916, in Winnebago County, the daughter of Ingebrit and Clara (Christianson) Martinson. Baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, she attended country school and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1936.

Orene married her true love, Melvin Sanden, on October 12, 1938, at the Salem Church Parsonage. The couple farmed near Joice, Iowa, for a few years and then purchased a farm northwest of Lake Mills. In addition to helping Melvin on the farm, Orene was a supervisor at Deluxe Products from 1961 to 1976. They retired to Lake Mills on South Lake Street in 1985.

Melvin and Orene loved to travel either by driving to visit family or going on bus trips with friends. They routinely made daily phone calls with members of their family and extended family as they tried to stay up-to-date with births of great-grandchildren, grand-nephews, and more. Orene loved her family and was one of those souls who remembered the faces, the names, the children, the marriages, and the deaths of prior and current generations. On December 31, 2009, Orene became a resident of Lake Mills Care Center.

Survivors include three children: Marilyn (Mrs. Allan Pederson), of Lake Mills, Carol Ann (Mrs. Dale Gurwell), of Des Moines, Iowa, and Gary Sanden (wife Deborah Charlson Sanden), of Marietta, Georgia; six grandchildren: James Thune, of Lake Mills, Jeff Pederson (wife Erin), of Lake Mills, Kim Schloesser (husband Dave), of Germantown, Wisconsin, Michelle Arnburg (husband Andrew), of Earlham, Iowa, Liza Sanden (husband Tom Crockett), of Anchorage, Alaska, and Ben Sanden (wife Shelly) of Marietta, Georgia; nine great-grandchildren: Michael Thune, Nora and Gracie Pederson, Alexandra and Drew Schloesser, Brianna and Lizzie Arnburg, and Collin and Wren Crockett; a sister-in-law, Geneva Martinson, Lake Mills; and a brother-in-law, Les Tiedman, Wells, Minnesota, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, in 1997; her parents; a son-in-law, Michael Thune; granddaughters, Joan and Julie Thune; her brothers and sisters-in-law: Joseph and Ruth Martinson, Vernon and Josephine Martinson, and Royden Martinson; a sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Ralph Gordon; and a sister, Carmen Tiedman.

Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 22, 2011, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordan officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and again one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday morning.

Burial will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery.
