Elvin Oscar Enderson
July 29, 1927 - September 4, 2011

Elvin O. Enderson, age 84, of Lake Mills, died Sunday, September 4, 2011, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Elvin Oscar Enderson was born on July 29, 1927, in Grant Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, to Oscar and Jennie (Krull) Enderson. He grew up on a farm south of Buffalo Center, contracting polio at the age of four. His affliction left him with a lifelong limp, but he didn’t let it keep him down.

Elvin attended Grant #5 country school and Buffalo Center High School. In 1949, he moved to a farm near Lake Mills with his family after his father passed away.

At the age of 21, Elvin had to step into his Dad’s boots as the oldest man on the farm, taking on his father’s farming responsibilities. Elvin worked hard all his life, often helping out neighbors when the need arose.

On May 3, 1953, he married Ruth Platts at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa. The couple later became members at the Asbury United Methodist Church. For many years, they continued to farm in the Lake Mills area, raising two children, Mark and Judy.

After Ruth passed away, Elvin married Lorraine Starr Reicherts on September 8, 1995. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls and Martha’s Vineyard. They moved into Lake Mills in 2008, and Elvin entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 2010. They loved to fish and play cards, especially Whist and Kings-in-the-Corner. Elvin always loved having the grandkids around and would play cards with them at the care center. He and Lorraine had one last game of Kings-in-the-Corner last Thursday.

Elvin is survived by his wife, Lorraine, of Lake Mills; a son, Mark (Sheila) Enderson, of Lake Mills; a daughter, Judy (Randy) Smith, of Ankeny, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Robert (Andrea) Enderson, Travis (Carrie) Enderson, Jonathan (Vanessa) Smith, Rachel Smith, Joy Smith, Rebekah Smith, and Jennifer Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Lilly Enderson, Hannah and Abigail Enderson, and Stephen Smith. Elvin is also survived by his step-children, Greg (Brenda) Reicherts, of Altoona, Iowa, Della (Steve) Benson, of Lake Mills, and Steve (Mona) Reicherts, of Lake Mills; many step-grandchildren; five siblings, Harriet Thompson, of Lake Mills, Ernest (Romelle) Enderson, of Northwood, Iowa, Rosella Ullestad, of Hanlontown, Iowa, Wayne (Barb) Enderson, of Tyler, Minnesota, and Ida (Marlyn) Rhine, of Mason City, Iowa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; a brother, Severt Enderson, in infancy; a sister, Leona Enderson, also in infancy; and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Marlin Thompson, Jonas Ullestad, Harriet (Paul) Johnson, and Charles (Katherine) Platts.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 9, 2011, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Wendi Gillan officiating. Burial will take place at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 8, 2011, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
