Viola Sullivan
(February 21, 1921 - June 29, 2011)Viola Sullivan, age 90, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at the Hancock County Hospital in Britt, Iowa.
Viola Larrine (Cole) Sullivan was born on February 21, 1921, along with her identical twin sister, Violet Irene, to William H. and Myrtle M. (Brown) Cole in rural Amboy, Minnesota.
Viola attended country school in the Amboy area, graduating from the eighth grade. She then worked as a live-in housekeeper for several families during the years prior to her marriage. Viola met Justice Sullivan in 1940 when she came to work at the Sorenson family farm. After Justice returned from military service in WW II, Viola and Justice were married on April 14, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Amboy, Minnesota. The ceremony was a double wedding with Viola's twin, Violet, and her husband, Arnold Estebo.
Viola and Justice lived in the Rake, Iowa, area after they first married. In 1947, they moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa. Viola became a baptized and confirmed member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1947.
Viola and Justice had two daughters, Carolyn Jean, born January 28, 1951, and Marilyn Kay, born May 1, 1956.
Viola was a homemaker. She had a "green thumb" and maintained a bountiful vegetable garden and strawberry patch. She was well known in the community for her cherry pies, which she often baked for charitable events. Viola also enjoyed family fishing outings to various Minnesota lakes.
When Justice developed eye problems in 1969, Viola began work first as an assembler and later as a press operator at Fleetguard in Lake Mills, Iowa, retiring in 1986 with sixteen and a half years of service.
Viola resided in her Buffalo Center home until June 26, 2011, when she was admitted to the Hancock County Community Hospital, in Britt, Iowa. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 29, 2011.
Viola is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Sullivan, of Buffalo Center, and Marilyn (Randy) Boyce, of Littleton, Colorado; her granddaughter, Andrea Boyce, also of Littleton, Colorado; her sister, Violet Estebo, of Mapleton, Minnesota; her brother-in-law, Glenn Sullivan, of Runnemede, New Jersey; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of fifty-nine years, Justice Sullivan; her three brothers: Harry, Glenn, and James (Bud) Cole; her four sisters: Dorothy Treanor, Margaret Wishart, Frances Hanson, and Alice Mahler; as well as several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, July 2, 2011, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be in West Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 1, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.
