(December 17, 1923 - March 22, 2011)

Elizabeth Smith, age 87, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Elizabeth Helen Smith, the daughter of Jacob and Antonia (Dolinsek) Stremfel, was born on December 17, 1923, in Seevers, Iowa. After graduating from Colfax High School, she attended Drake University where she earned a teaching certificate.

Elizabeth married Bernard C. Smith on June 3, 1944, in Colfax, Iowa. They farmed in central Iowa until moving to Buffalo Center in 1952. In 1964, the couple moved to a farm southwest of Thompson. Elizabeth later moved back to Buffalo Center.

Elizabeth enjoyed baking, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She was also very proud of her garden. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elizabeth was a member of the Altar Society for many years.

She is survived by her five children: Mike Smith, and his wife, Deb, of Buffalo Center, Thomas Smith, and his wife Sallie, of Buffalo Center, Ann Coady, and her husband, Jack, of Solon, Iowa, Barbara Agena, and her husband, Alan, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Mary Beth Smith, of Ames, Iowa; nine grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Nick Leydens, of Pella, Iowa; three sisters-in-law: Jean Zielinski, and her husband, Bob, of Kerrville, Texas, Mary Lou Stremfel, of California, and Ruth Smith, of Buffalo Center; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers: John, Frank, Art, and Joseph; and four sisters: Mary, Annie, Nettie, and Genevieve.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, March 25, 2011, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa, with Father Dennis Miller officiating. Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 7:00 PM.
