Doris Elaine (Bjelland) Helgeson, 88, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Doris Elaine (Bjelland) Helgeson was born February 25, 1923, at home in Worth County, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Emma (Sundsvold) Bjelland. She was baptized, confirmed and married at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in Worth County, Iowa. She attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1941. She attended Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, for one year before working at Deckers Packing Plant in Mason City as a secretary. She moved back to Lake Mills in 1944 and worked as the school secretary through 1946.

On June 28, 1946, she married Milford Helgeson at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm near Lake Mills, Iowa, and began raising their family.

Doris was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills where she was active in the Circles and Alter Guild. In addition to her involvement with the church, she was an active member of the Lake Mills Literary Club and The Fine Arts Club as well as a volunteer at the Lake Mills School.

She enjoyed cooking, reading, golfing, walking, watching birds and other wildlife, and solving crossword puzzles.

A family woman, Doris loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her husband, Milford; her children, Janice, David, and Michael, and his wife, Rosalie, all of Lake Mills, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tara (Jon) Stene, of Zumbrota, Minnesota, Jessica (Nick) McLawhorn, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Rachel, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ryan (Kelli) Helgeson, Howell, Michigan, Justin (Megan) Helgeson, of Urbandale, Iowa, and Matthew (Julianne) Helgeson, of Des Moines, Iowa; ten great-grandchildren, Tyler, Jenna, William, Téa, Zoe, Drew, Josie, Hayden, Conner and Lane; and one sister, Lorraine Bliss, of Lake Mills; a sister-in-law, Verna Helgeson, of Lake Mills; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother in-law; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 PM, Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again at the church one hour prior to the service.

Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills, Iowa.

The family request memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa.
