Constance Maxine Brainerd
(November 24, 1930 - March 14, 2011)

Constance M. Brainerd, 80, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Constance Maxine Douglas was born November 24, 1930, to David D. Douglas and Frances (Peterson) Douglas of Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. She attended Fort Dodge High School, graduating in 1949. She then attended Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, where she studied art.

On June 10, 1951, Constance was united in marriage to Robert Donald Brainerd in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Subsequently, Constance and Robert lived in Fort dodge, Des Moines, Freemont, LuVerne, and Lake Mills, Iowa. Throughout their married years, Robert practiced medicine while Constance focused on homemaking and caring for her family.

Constance was active in several organizations, including the Saturday Afternoon Club, the Historical Society, the Fine Arts Guild, and the Republican Women. A talented artist, she worked in two mediums, painting and sculpting. She was politically active and had a great love for her country. She also loved all living creatures. She enjoyed feeding and watching birds. Everyone could see the effects of her green thumb both on her garden and on her vast array of house plants. Her kindness and generosity will long be remembered.

Constance is survived by four children, Robert Brainerd, Jr., of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, Heather Brainerd, of Lake Mills, Iowa, Barrett Brainerd, and his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City, Iowa, and Karen Stensrude, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her five grandchildren, Mike Ingebretson, and his wife, Rachel, Amanda Brainerd, Spencer Stensrude, Justine Stensrude, and Kimberly Brainerd; her great grandchildren, Michaela McNelly, Morgan Brainerd, Alexis Anderson, and Brody Ingebretson; one brother, Richard Douglas, and his wife, Arlene, of Ottumwa, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Constance was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Robert Brainerd; and her nephew.

Memorial service will be at 10:30 AM, on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Family will greet friends at Salem Lutheran Church Friday morning one hour prior to service time.

Inurnment will take place at 3:00 PM, on Friday, March 18, 2011, at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa, with Pastor Nathan Peitsch officiating.
