Leland youth, 23, killed in Vietnam
Second Forest City area youth in as many months has been lost in combat action in Vietnam with the announcement Tuesday morning that S-P4 Paul David Carson had been killed by a land mine explosion there Sunday.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. David H. Carson who farm southwest of Leland. His wife is the former Joyce Ann Colby of Mason City.

Information received from the Army by Mrs. Carson indicated only that Paul had been killed in combat action by a land mine explosion. His most recent letters reported that his unit was a Fire Base Bastogne in the DaNang area of Vietnam. Paul was a rifleman in the 101st Airborne division.

Paul was born June 11, 1946, at Forest City municipal hospital. He was graduated from Forest City high school with the class of 1964 and from Waldorf college two years later. He was farming with his father when he was drafted Dec. 10, 1968.

After completing his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, he went to advanced infantry training there, graduating in May, 1969. After spending a month's leave at home, he left for Vietnam in June, 1969.

He married Miss Colby Oct. 19, 1968, at Mason City. While Paul was overseas she has been employed as a secretary at the Thompson Insurance agency and was making her home with Paul's parents.

Survivors include his wife, his parents, a sister, Kathy, a sophomore at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Carson.

The family had not been advised when Paul's body would be returned for services.
