Joyce Marie Evjen
(February 16, 1938 - January 20, 2011)Joyce M. Evjen, age 72, of Lake Mills, died Thursday, January 20, 2011, in Lake Mills, Iowa.
Joyce Marie (Nelson) Evjen was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Summit, South Dakota, to Clarence and Etta (Adolphsen) Nelson. She was baptized at Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, South Shore, South Dakota, and was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, Watertown, South Dakota. She grew up in the Watertown area and graduated from Watertown High School in 1956.
On August 4, 1956, Joyce was united in marriage to John Evjen. The couple moved to Lake Mills where Joyce found work at Monk’s Grill when it first opened. In 1958, she began working at Deluxe Products (Fleetguard/Cummins) and spent 37 years as a loyal employee. Joyce stayed active with the Salem Lutheran Church Altar Guild and her circle’s work. She especially enjoyed preparing the baby layettes, the school kits and the health kits.
Family vacations often took them back to South Dakota where Joyce enjoyed visiting as many family members, friends, and classmates as she could in the time allowed. Reading, antiquing, and flower pot gardening were her hobbies. She also spent many years with friends on bowling leagues and was an avid fan of the Twins and the Vikings.
After her retirement, Joyce was happy to travel more to see friends and family. She and John spent time each winter in Texas and California visiting their children, grandchildren, and long distance family and friends. They made many new friends at their adopted church, Grace Lutheran, in Mathis, Texas. In Lake Mills, Joyce enjoyed meeting friends at the monthly Fleetguard retirement breakfasts as well as at the weekday Congregate Meals at the Senior Center. She also loved her weekly breakfast with the girls and visiting with friends over coffee, treats, and maybe even playing a game of dice or cards.
When they joined the Lake Mills Senior Citizens Club, Joyce became an active board member serving as Secretary, Vice President, President, and Trustee over the years. She had high hopes that the club would pick up new members and that it would thrive in the future.
She will be missed by her family including her husband, John, of 54 years; her daughter, Janice (Tom) Ramthun, of Lake Mills, and her son, Jim (Rose) Evjen, of Portland, Texas; her four grandchildren, Matthew Ramthun, of Lake Mills, Jennifer Ramthun, of Ames, Iowa, Taniesha Evjen and Dakota Evjen, of Portland, Texas; her sisters, Delores Roberts and Donna Miller, both of Watertown, South Dakota, and Barbara (Dennis) Meseberg, of Ontario, California; her brother, Jerry (Deb) Nelson, of Lawrence, Kansas; her sisters-in-law: Vivian Larson, of Watertown, South Dakota, Joyce Evjen, of Strandburg, South Dakota, and Dorothy Barck, of Marshall, Minnesota; her brother-in-law, Raynard (Marilyn) Evjen, of Stockholm, South Dakota; two aunts, Blanche Hoepner, of Atwater, Minnesota, and Naomi Klucas, of Watertown, South Dakota, and by many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters-in-law and nine brothers-in-law, many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
