Gilbert “Gib” Grunhuvd, 88, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Gilbert K. Grunhuvd was born on October 28, 1922, on the family farm in Winnebago County, Iowa, to Norris and Luella (Ausen) Grunhovd. He attended country schools and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1940.

Gib was inducted into the United States Navy on March 28, 1946, and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged from active service on January 12, 1948.

On July 24, 1959, Gib was united in marriage with Anita Johnson. The couple made their home farming in rural Lake Mills, and Gib later retired from Fleetguard Industries as a security officer.

Survivors include his wife, Anita; a brother, Kermit (Blanche) Grunhovd; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Johnson, a brother-in-law, Andrew (Ruth) Johnson, all of Lake Mills; and a sister-in-law, Shirley (Thomas) Tveit of Kiester, Minnesota. He is also survived by two aunts, Ruth Jacobson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Vivian Witham, of Austin, Minnesota; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Laurel; and a sister, Ann Mae.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with Pastor Bill Peters officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service at the Winnebago Lutheran Church on Saturday morning.

Burial will be at the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lake Mills, Iowa. Military honors will be conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235 of Lake Mills.
