Roger LeRoy Hanson
(June 18, 1929 - November 27, 2010)

Roger LeRoy Hanson, age 81, of Kiester, Minnesota, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 27, 2010, surrounded by his family, following a long battle with parkinson’s and heart disease.

Roger was born June 18, 1929, at the parental home of Helmer and Julia Hanson in Worth County, Iowa. He was the youngest of 5 children. Roger graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1947, following which, he served as a member of the 133rd Infantry for the Iowa National Guard from 1947 to 1955.

On July 2, 1955, Roger was united in marriage with Joycelyn Bogenschutz at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, and the couple was blessed with 4 children.

Roger was employed by Queen Manufacturing Company in Albert Lea, Minnesota, from 1950 to 1960. Then, he owned and operated the Marigold Quality Check Milk route in Kiester from 1960 to 1965. In June of 1965, Roger purchased the Kiester Hardware Store, operating first as the Farwell OK Hardware and then as the Trustworthy Hardware for 31 years. Roger also operated an LP delivery business for 25 years.

He was a charter member of the Kiester Ambulance Service for 26 years and served on a number of committees that included the church council for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Kiester Chamber of Commerce and various volunteer organizations.

Roger enjoyed fishing, bowling, woodworking, watching sports and playing cribbage. He loved to spend time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joycelyn; his son, Craig (Joan) Hanson, of North St. Paul, Minnesota; his daughters, Charlotte (Chuck) Chouanard, of Kasota, Minnesota, and Roslyn (Jay) Schumann, of Lakefield, Minnesota; his sister, Florence Johnston, of Forest City, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Nikki (Josh) Jensen, of Hudson, Wisconsin, MacKenzie (Marty) Duenow, of New Ulm, Minnesota, Dannah (Aaron) Hanson, of Otsego, Minnesota, Tyler and Andrey Chouanard, of Kasota, Minnesota, and Jared and Markael Schumann, of Lakefield, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Riley and Leighton; a brother-in-law, Bill Skellenger, of Lake Mills, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jeffrey; his in-laws, Walter and Alice Bogenschutz; his sister-in-law, Carol Skellenger, his sisters, Luella Vermedahl, Hazel Fagen, and Dee Anderson; and his brothers-in-law, Norm Vermedahl, Vern Fagen, Robert Johnston and Don Anderson.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minnesota, with Pastor Richard Steffen officiating. Inurnment will take place in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery, Kiester.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minnesota, and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Crossroads Community Hospice in Albert Lea, Minnesota, are preferred.
