Frances Kelso
(July 1, 1926 - December 5, 2010)Frances Kelso, age 84, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away on Sunday December 5, 2010, surrounded by her family at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Frances was born on July 1, 1926, in Algona, Iowa, to Harm and Johanna (Jutting) Harms. She attended rural schools near Buffalo Center, Iowa, and on Valentines Day, 1946, she married John F. Kelso. John and Frances were blessed with two children, John T. and Mary. They spent their entire married life farming in the Buffalo Center area.
Whether tending livestock, doing chores, or fieldwork, Frances was a traditional 'farmers Wife,' helping her husband run the farm. She also worked in the Dietary Department at the Buffalo Center Hospital for many years until its closing. Later, she worked at the Buffalo Center Drive Inn, the Buffalo Center School, and the Timely Mission Nursing Home.
Frances loved being around people and a part of her community. She enjoyed being the "Lunch Lady" at the school or delivering food as a part of Meals on Wheels. She was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Alter Society, the VFW Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She loved playing cards, sharing stories and pictures, having coffee with friends and family, and watching sports, especially the North Iowa Bisons and Iowa Hawkeyes. She loved going to her grandkids activities and always talked about her grandkids and great-grandkids. Frances was always happiest when surrounded by her family and friends.
She is survived by her children: John (Helen) Kelso and Mary (Dave) Peterson, both of Lake Mills, Iowa; her grandchildren: J.C. (Janell) Kelso, of Northwood, Iowa, Jeff (Michele) Kelso, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Kris (Jessie) Peterson, of Big Lake, Minnesota, and Megan (Adam) Ritter, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her seven great-grandchildren with another on the way; her siblings: Leonard (Lois) Harms, of Forest City, Leona Vinz, of Thompson, Harley (Doris) Harms, of Buffalo Center, Doris (Gary) Sinnard, of Forest City, and Linda Harms, of Buffalo Center; her sister-in-law, Harriet Harms, of Buffalo Center; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1994; her parents; and stepmother, Anna; and three brothers: Harold, in infancy, Willard, and Ubbie.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 10:30 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa, from 5 to 7 PM. A scripture service will be held at 7 PM.
