Lorraine Thomsen
(January 5, 1938 - December 4, 2010)Lorraine Thomsen, age 72, of Lakota, Iowa, died Saturday, December 4, 2010, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
Lorraine (Rainy) Cathryn Thomsen, the third of five girls, was born January 5, 1938, to Anna (Miller) and George Gallagher on the family farm near Stevens, Kossuth County, Iowa. She received her education in the Hebron Township country school and at Lakota, graduating in 1955.
Lorraine was married to Larry Thomsen on November 25, 1956, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minnesota. They lived a few years in Buffalo Center, Iowa, before moving to a farm outside of Lakota where she lived until the time of her death. Lorraine worked at Telex in Blue Earth, Minnesota, for over twenty years and retired in 2003.
Lorraine grew up loving farm life, a passion that continued on into her married life. She enjoyed being outdoors and driving tractor, especially, at harvest time when she could be in the field helping her sons. She also loved gardening, tending her flowers, and watching and feeding her birds, some of her favorite pastimes. Most of all, however, she enjoyed cooking and getting ready for get-togethers and holidays with her friends and family. After retiring, Lorraine enjoyed traveling, particularly her annual trips with her sisters and her many adventures with her special friend, Dave. Her door was always open to anyone that wanted to stop for a cup of coffee and a visit. Lorraine enjoyed life and worked in a seemingly effortless way.
Lorraine passed away on December 4, 2010, of cancer, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa, at the age of 72 surrounded by her family.
Lorraine is survived by her four children, Sheryl and her husband Al Hinton, of Stewartville, Minnesota, Sheila and her husband Mike Koppen, of Lakota, Sherman and his wife Laura, of Lakota, and Shawn, of Buffalo Center; and by her nine grandchildren: Lucas and Cole Heitland, Brady Koppen, Megan and (Nich) Holland, Emily, Gabe, Jamie, Danielle and Taylor Thomsen; and by two great grandsons, Brendan Price and Jackson Holland (born Dec 2). Also, surviving are her four sisters: Marilyn Greenwood, of Eagle Bend, Minnesota, Midge and Elnor Heidecker, of New Brighton, Minnesota, Linda and Darrel Roemmich, Albert Lea, Minnesota, NS Monie and Dick Bailey, Savannah, Illinois, and her very special friend David Lenort.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Thomsen, her mother and father, Anna and George Gallagher, and her mother and father-in-law, Edna and Nick Thomsen.
Her funeral ceremony will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lakota with Rev. Marino Melsted and Rev. Arno Melz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Lakota.
