Arnold James Voortmann was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Voortmann on June 12, 1941 in Buffalo Center, Iowa. He was 19 1/2 years old at the time of his death. He graduated from the Buffalo Center high school in the spring of 1959. Shortly thereafter he enrolled in the Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebr., specializing in auto mechanics. Upon completion of his course he found employment in Omaha at a Ford garage. For the last 4 1/2 months he had been employed at Wyborny Implements at Thompson.
His death occured on a gravel road just a few miles southeast of his home, where his car swerved off the road and rolled over into the field. He was thrown out of the car and his body was found about 75 feet from the wreckage of his car.
Arnold will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was very active in his church, having served as an usher, president of the Luther League and was a Sunday School teacher.
He leaves to mourn, his mother; three brothers, Clarence, Harold and Richard; besides a host of relatives and friends. His father preceeded him in death four months ago.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Linden Lutheran Church with the Rev. Norman Tungseth and the Rev. Nels Flugum officiating. A male quartet from the Liberty Lutheran Church, Rake, sang: "Under His Wings," and "Calling For You." Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Olson, Rake, sang: "Sweet Hour of Prayer," and "If We Could See Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were: Donald Abels, Garry Alberts, Richard Smidt, Bill Doyle, Gordon Heyer and Harry Nelson. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. His body was laid to rest in the Graceland cemetery at Buffalo Center.
