Ruth Nelson
(June 15, 1920 - September 4, 2010)

Ruth Nelson, age 90, of Thompson, Iowa, passed away peacefully at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa, on Saturday September 4, 2010.

Ruth Jeanette (Thorland) Nelson was born June 15, 1920, on the family farm near Thompson. She was the daughter of Edward and Mary (Dahl) Thorland and the youngest of 8 children. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran church of Thompson where she was a life-long member. She attended the Eden country school and graduated from Thompson High School.

On Feb 21, 1947, she married Gaylord Nelson, the boy from down the road. Together they farmed north of Thompson. They were the parents of 3 children, Gary, Sharon and Lyle.

Ruth was a very caring person who never had a bad word to say about anyone. She always observed morning devotions; her faith was strong and she lived it. She loved to cook and bake and would write recipes on any scrap of paper she could find lying around the house. She loved animals and always had a dog. The last, her Liz, kept her company while still living on the farm. She was active in circle and Ladies Aide and enjoyed the fellowship of the church quilting group. She was always there to lend a helping hand whether with gardening, canning, wallpapering, or cleaning up after a storm. Her family was the most important part in her life.

She is survived by her three children: Gary (LaMone) Nelson of Mason City, Sharon (Eugene) Irons of Buffalo Center, and Lyle (Deb) Nelson of Leland; five grand-daughters: Amy (Jason) Scheer of Longmont, Colorado, LaNette (Brendan) Beck of Mason City, Melanie (Jeff) Riles of Mason City, Emily (Jay) Smith of Rochester, Minnesota, and Renae Nelson of Leland; and by twin great-grandchildren, Samantha and Sierra Scheer, and Carson and Connor Beck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord, in 1985; four brothers: Richard, Albert, Clarence, and Edgar, and three sisters, Josie, Mary, and Agnes. She will be greatly missed.

Services for Ruth will be Friday September 10, 2010, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, at 1:30 PM with Rev. Mark Decker officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday September 9, 2010, from 5 – 7 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, and for one hour prior to the service on Friday.
