FOREST CITY – Raymond E. Schmidt, 82, of Forest City, died Sunday (July 25, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.

Raymond Edgar Schmidt, the son of Otto and Bertha (Jass) Schmidt, was born November 7, 1927, on a farm southeast of Miller. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner. Ray attended St. John's Parochial School and graduated from Ventura High School in 1945. In 1946, he moved to Forest City to manage the Soda Bar with his brother, Earl, and later joined his brother, Ted, as a partner at Forest City Millworks.

In 1974, Ray started his own business as Ray's Cabinet Shop. Upon retirement he worked for the Park and Recreation Department for the city of Forest City. Ray was an avid craftsman with wood. A special project to him done with Mike Lewellen was duplicating the woodwork at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home at the time of their remodeling. There is evidence of his craftsmanship in many places. His greatest joy was his family. He loved them dearly.
