Walter E. (Duke) Moe
(September 8, 1922 - April 15, 2010)Walter Earl (Duke) Moe, 87 of Lake Mills, IA, died Thursday, April 15, 2010, at his home in Lake Mills, IA.
Duke was born September 8th, 1922, in Lake Mills. He attended school in Lake Mills, graduating in 1940. In high school, he was a key player in several sports. He also enjoyed participating in school musicals and often was one of the lead singers.
He served his country during World War II in the US Navy on a PT boat in the South Pacific. Duke was an avid sportsman, enjoying pheasant hunting and regular fishing expeditions to Canada with long-time friends. He also enjoyed photography and working in the darkroom he built in his home. Later in life, he was happy to join his friends playing golf.
In 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Clarine McKee. They enjoyed almost 64 years of marriage. They were blessed with one daughter, Pamela.
In 1949, he went to Elgin, Illinois, to the Elgin Watch College. He bought Weed’s Jewelry and operated it as Moe’s Jewelry for twelve years.
In 1962, he went to work at Farmers & Merchants State Bank, now Manufacturers Bank & Trust. He worked there until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement, Duke and Clarine spent thirteen years living in McAllen, Texas, during the winter months.
Duke had a lovely voice and sang for countless weddings and funerals. He also sang in the Salem Choir and the Lake Mills Community Chorus. At the funeral, his family would like to share a CD of him singing “How Great Thou Art” which he sang for numerous funerals.
Duke was a kind and patient man; a good husband and father and will be greatly missed.
Duke is survived by his wife Clarine; daughter Pam; brother-in-law Wayne McKee; nephew Lon (Cindy) McKee; niece Peg McKee; great-nephew Bart (Sarah) McKee and daughter Maggie; great-niece Kelly (Scott) Parrish, son Byson and twin daughters Isabel and Ashley; cousins Ann (Dale) Johnson and Dale Sandberg; along with other family and friends.
Duke was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Wilson; brother Don Wilson; grandparents Mr. & Mrs. M.M. Sandberg; parents-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Melvin McKee; brother-in-law Lewine McKee and sister-in-law Audy Winden.
Memorial service will be 1:30 PM, Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.
Family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Military rites will be performed by Lake Mills Otto/Chose post #235.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at Salem Memorial Cemetery.
