Lula M. Thayer - February 26, 1920 - January 9, 2010
FOREST CITY - Lula M. Thayer, age 89 of Forest City, died Saturday, January 9, 2009 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Lula M. Thayer was born on February 26, 1920 on a farm in rural Thompson, Iowa, one of five girls born to John and Elizabeth (Rossiter) McAlister. She grew up on the farm and received her education in rural schools near her home, graduating from Thompson High School.
She married Sylvan Awe on February 26, 1938. The couple tenant farmed several different place over the years so the family moved around a lot. They moved to Forest City in the early 1950s and worked together “flipping” homes ~ purchasing and fixing up houses before selling them. Lula held many different jobs during this time. But her favorite work was delivering motorhomes with Sylvan.
She continued this work after Sylvan’s death in 1972. She married Gail Thayer in 1974 and the couple made their home in Forest City. Gail passed away in 2006.
Lula enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. Most recently she made her home at Forest Plaza in Forest City.
She is survived by her daughters: Carmen (Bob) Holland; Connie (Jim) French and Kaye (Norman) Hagen, all of Forest City. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and three sisters, Gladys, Amelia and Jean.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Sylvan and Gail and a sister
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2009 at Petersen Lund Funeral Home 505 N Clark St Forest City with Pastor Robert Snitzer officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Monday, January 11, 2009 at the funeral home and continue an hour prior to service.
